The starting point
A corrected name or date should improve a collection without hiding the earlier uncertainty. Record what changed, why it changed and which source supports the revision. A correction log does not need to be elaborate; a small structured note can be enough.
A useful way to read the evidence
Link the correction to an item identifier and keep the original file intact. If a public caption changes, ensure related catalogue entries are reviewed too. Distinguish an actual correction from an added interpretation. This lets future readers follow the evidence and helps the maintainer avoid reintroducing a discarded claim when an older working copy resurfaces.
Keep in your notes
- Identify the affected item.
- Link supporting evidence.
- Review related descriptions.
