Reading the 2016 Continental Cup Campaign

Keep the route to a semi-final separate from the semi-final result.

The starting point

The FA’s August 2016 semi-final account describes London Bees’ Continental Cup campaign and refers to the preceding Chelsea upset. A cup run is a sequence of fixtures. Recalling the most striking win without its place in that sequence can leave the reader with an incomplete impression of what followed.

A useful way to read the evidence

Build one row per round: opponent, competition stage, date, regulation outcome and any deciding procedure that the record supplies. Link each row to its evidence. Avoid transferring a headline’s emotional description into a statistical field. The resulting chronology lets readers appreciate a notable run while still seeing the exact boundaries of the available match records.

Keep in your notes

  • Keep one row per round.
  • Distinguish rounds and outcomes.
  • Link claims to dated records.
