The starting point
A pitch diagram helps a newcomer locate the touchlines, goal lines, halfway line and marked areas. Use the IFAB law edition relevant to the match you are studying. A modern illustration can explain a present rule, but it should not automatically be used as evidence for every historical requirement.
A useful way to read the evidence
Sketch a plain diagram and label only the features you can identify in the source. Keep measurements separate from your drawing unless you have checked the applicable law text. When discussing a photograph, remember that perspective can make distances appear different. A descriptive diagram should clarify the record rather than suggest a precision the image cannot support.
Keep in your notes
- Choose a dated edition.
- Label features before dimensions.
- Account for photographic perspective.
