Cup Results and Deciding Procedures

Keep a match score separate from any procedure used to decide progression.

The starting point

Cup accounts can refer to regulation play, additional periods or a deciding procedure. These elements should be recorded in separate fields when the source provides them. A progression result and a goals total are not always interchangeable descriptions, so copying only the headline can produce a misleading archive entry.

A useful way to read the evidence

Start with the exact stage and the outcome described in the official record. Add separate fields for the match score and any deciding procedure, leaving them blank when the account does not establish them. Do not invent a conventional format to complete a table. A small amount of explicit missing data is preferable to a tidy but inaccurate cup history.

Keep in your notes

  • Name the competition stage.
  • Separate scores and progression.
  • Leave unsupported fields blank.
