What Highlights Leave Out

Treat edited footage as a selection rather than a complete match.

The starting point

A highlights sequence can be valuable evidence of the passages it shows. Editing may omit the build-up, intervening phases and other relevant incidents. A written report offers another selection. Neither source should automatically be treated as a complete account of everything that happened during the fixture.

A useful way to read the evidence

Keep a note of the footage identity and any visible timing information. Describe observed actions precisely, then identify interpretations separately. Compare them with a contemporary report when one is available. If the sources do not cover the same moment, explain that limitation rather than treating the lack of a matching passage as a contradiction.

Keep in your notes

  • Identify the footage edition.
  • Describe observable actions.
  • Explain gaps between sources.
