September 1991: A League Milestone

Place the first nationwide women’s league within a dated timeline.

The starting point

The FA’s historical account dates the start of the nationwide women’s league to September 15, 1991. That milestone is useful for orientation. It should not erase earlier local and regional football or imply that all clubs immediately had identical resources, facilities or experiences within the new structure.

A useful way to read the evidence

Use the date as one entry in a larger timeline. Add separate records for local competition histories when reliable evidence is available. State whether a source describes a national structure, a division or an individual team. These levels can coexist in the same account without being mistaken for interchangeable descriptions of the game.

Keep in your notes

  • Use the dated milestone.
  • Keep local histories visible.
  • Name the level of competition.
