Use dates and source labels to follow a football story across changing names.

The starting point

The club history and the FA’s rivalry account connect Wembley Ladies, Barnet Ladies and the London Bees identity. Those names help organise an archive, but a name alone does not establish which players, officials or grounds continued between seasons. Preserve the name used in each original record before adding a modern descriptive label.

A useful way to read the evidence

Make a timeline whose entries have a date, the contemporary name and a source. Put explanations of later identity in a separate column. This keeps a reader from mistaking an old headline for a modern fixture. If two accounts differ, retain both attributions and investigate the particular point rather than silently choosing the more convenient version.

Keep in your notes

  • Keep contemporary names.
  • Attach dates to transitions.
  • Distinguish team identity from personnel.
